The Process of Digital Full-Colour Rotary Printing

Unlike other printing options, full-colour rotary printing has a simple and speedy process. This printing method is able to handle high volumes of drinkware quickly and effectively, making it a great option for businesses looking to produce large quantities of promotional drinkware.

This is because the printing process uses a dedicated digital rotary UV printer, which applies the ink via a series of rotating cylinders, allowing for the creation of highly detailed and complex designs.

Differences between Digital Full-Colour Rotary Printing vs other traditional methods

Typically, sublimation and screen-printing are used when attempting wrap-around printing but these traditional methods have limitations in speed, sustainability, and capabilities. With the dawn of digital printing, rotary attachments were created for flatbed printers.

Sublimation: This decoration method uses heat transfer technology and pressure to apply a design from a transfer paper printed with sublimation inks onto the item. It leaves a natural, no-fade finish.

One of the advantages of this method is that sublimation inks are made of natural dyes so they look naturally part of the product and create vivid, full-colour designs.

The downsides to this method are you can’t avoid imperfections where both sides of the artwork meet. It’s also not eco-friendly as it uses transfer paper for each unit which will contribute to the growing waste problem, especially for high-volume orders.

Screen Printing: Screen printing is one of the oldest and most popular decoration options. Screen printing is usually applied to a product’s surface by forcing UV ink through a fine screen mesh with a squeegee. However, it can only accommodate one colour at a time and each additional colour will require a new screen.

The issue with screen printing is that the results are not always seamless. It always leaves a registration mark on the print. Then there’s also the problem of its one-colour printing. To add more colours, the process needs to be repeated from the top. It also requires drying in between the colours so it will require a lot of labour and lead time.

Rotary Attachment: A standard flatbed printer can print full-colour rotary designs on drinkware by adding a rotary attachment. These attachments may need extra tooling fixtures or can be attached magnetically to the printer. Since they are attachments, they can only accommodate cylindrical items that don’t have any obstruction to the surface, such as tumblers without handles.
